Aging at Home
When we're young, we're all striving for the American dream, growing our careers and owning a home.
Home ownership is a huge milestone. For many of people, the hope is to stay in that home until the mortgage is paid off and they can live out their days comfortably and peacefully. Unfortunately, sometimes that decision isn’t our decision anymore, depending on our health and how well we’ve planned financially. I’ve seen it play out within my own family. Some had a plan in place and others didn’t. That’s why I encourage you to take steps to live out your golden years the way you want to.
First, don't ask your body to take care of you when you're in your 70s, 80s, and 90s, if you didn't take care of your body in your 40s, 50s, and 60s. Get active now. Go for walks, eat healthy. You’ll benefit so much more later in life if you get moving while you’re still able to.
Another important step may be long-term care insurance. So many people buy life insurance in case there's an unforeseen event and they want to take care of their loved ones, but they often overlook or put off getting long-term care insurance. It could be the one thing that gives you the freedom to stay in your home and get in-home care, while preserving your hard-earned wealth.
It's also important to have those difficult conversations with your family now so they’re clear about your wishes. It can be an added layer of stress to an already stressful time if your kids are left scrambling to figure out how to take care of you or fighting over what you would want. We’re happy to help you navigate those conversations and take some of that vulnerability off your plate.
